Europe Just Went Dark: What the August 2026 Total Eclipse Means for Australia in 2028
On 12 August 2026, a total solar eclipse plunged parts of Europe into darkness for the first time in decades. I break down what happened, why it mattered, and how it sets the stage for the once in a lifetime eclipse that will darken Sydney in 2028.
As someone who has spent years chasing rockets, telescopes and the quiet drama of the night sky, I can tell you that nothing quite prepares you for a total solar eclipse. And on 12 August 2026, a slice of our planet got to feel that awe again, as the Moon slid perfectly in front of the Sun and turned afternoon into an eerie, star-flecked twilight.
I was glued to the coverage from the other side of the world, and even through a screen the moment was electric. Down here in Australia we sat this one out geographically, but that does not make it any less significant, because what happened over Europe is really a preview of the spectacle heading straight for our own backyard in just two years.
What actually happened on 12 August
The eclipse carved a narrow path of totality across a remarkably remote and beautiful stretch of the globe. It began over Siberian Russia, swept across eastern Greenland, brushed the west coast of Iceland, and then crossed northern Spain along with a tiny sliver of Portugal, before the Sun set on the whole extraordinary event.
What made this one special was not just where it went, but how rare it was for that part of the world. This was the first total solar eclipse to touch mainland Europe since way back in 1999, ending a drought that had lasted more than a quarter of a century for hundreds of millions of people who had never seen totality from home soil.
To put that in perspective, since that 1999 eclipse there have been eighteen total eclipses of the Sun around the world, yet only twice did the path of totality even clip the edge of the European continent, over Georgia and Russia in 2006 and the Faroe Islands and Svalbard in 2015. So for Spain and Iceland, this was genuinely a generational moment.
The main event itself was brief, as these things always are. The maximum duration of totality reached just 2 minutes and 18 seconds, a fleeting window in which the sky darkened, the temperature dropped and the Sun's shimmering corona blazed into view around the black disc of the Moon before daylight came flooding back.
Why timing and geography made it dramatic
One detail I found genuinely poetic is that in Spain and the northwestern tip of Portugal, the Sun was not fully eclipsed until the late evening, shortly before sunset. That means observers watched totality happen with the Sun hanging low over the horizon, a rare and cinematic setup that photographers had been dreaming about for years.
The geometry over Spain was generous too. As the shadow crossed the country, the path of totality was relatively wide, roughly 290 kilometres across, which meant a large swathe of northern Spain fell into the Moon's shadow rather than just a thin ribbon. For a continent starved of eclipses, that width translated into a lot of very happy skywatchers.
Events like this are never just about the visual drama, as much as I love that part. Every total eclipse is also a fleeting laboratory, a rare chance for scientists to study the Sun's faint outer atmosphere, and for the rest of us a powerful reminder of the clockwork precision that governs the movements of the sky above our heads.
Australia has the main event coming

Here is why I am telling all of this to an Australian audience with a grin on my face. The 2026 eclipse was the warm up act, because our real headliner arrives on 22 July 2028, when a total solar eclipse will sweep across the country and pass directly over the heart of Sydney, an event that feels almost too good to be true.
The path is spectacular in scope. Totality begins in the Indian Ocean, crosses our Cocos, Keeling and Christmas Islands, makes landfall in the Kimberley region of Western Australia, then races through the Northern Territory and southwest Queensland before reaching New South Wales and Sydney, finally heading over the Tasman Sea to darken Queenstown and Dunedin in New Zealand.
For Sydneysiders the numbers are staggering. The centreline runs right over the CBD, the shadow will be about 230 kilometres wide so the entire greater metro area from the Blue Mountains to the Northern Beaches falls inside it, and the city will be plunged into darkness for a glorious 3 minutes and 49 seconds, far longer than the 2026 event managed.
If that does not convince you to start planning now, consider this: it will be the first total solar eclipse visible from Sydney since 1857, and the last until the year 2858.
