'Extremely Confident': NASA's Chief Backs a 2027 Artemis III, but This Time the Moon Landing Will Have to Wait

NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman says he is extremely confident Artemis III will fly in 2027, yet the mission has been reshaped into an Earth-orbit demonstration in which Orion docks with test versions of the SpaceX and Blue Origin landers, rather than touching down on the Moon.

NASA's next flagship human spaceflight mission has a launch year again, but it no longer has a Moon landing. Speaking on August 14, 2026, NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman said he is extremely confident that the agency will be able to launch Artemis III in 2027, even as the mission has been quietly redrawn into something very different from the lunar touchdown many expected.

Isaacman framed the schedule as a matter of relentless management rather than hope, saying the agency now tracks every single component of the program down to the day and down to the hour. His confidence is notable given how often Artemis timelines have slipped, and it sets a demanding public marker for a mission whose architecture depends on several private rockets all arriving on time.

A reshaped mission

The most striking part of the update is what Artemis III will actually do. Rather than landing astronauts near the lunar south pole, the mission is now planned as an Earth-orbital demonstration, a rendezvous and docking exercise designed to prove that the hardware meant to carry humans to the surface can safely meet and connect in space first.

Under the current plan, a four-person crew launches aboard the Space Launch System and the Orion spacecraft, then practices docking with test versions of the two commercial landers being built for the program. The astronauts remain aboard Orion for the docking work and would transfer into Blue Origin's test lander to check out its life-support and habitation systems, without ever going near the Moon's surface.

Three rockets, two landers

The choreography behind that simple description is anything but simple. The sequence is expected to begin with Blue Origin's New Glenn rocket lofting a test version of its Blue Moon Mark 2 lander into low Earth orbit, setting up the first target for the crew to chase down once they reach space themselves.

Days later, the SLS rocket and Orion would follow, rendezvousing and docking with the waiting Blue Origin vehicle. Separately, SpaceX is due to launch its Starship Human Landing System, giving Orion a second docking target so the mission can test both of the landers that NASA is counting on for future surface missions.

The point of all this is risk reduction. By rehearsing the rendezvous, docking and crew transfer in the relative safety of Earth orbit, NASA hopes to shake out problems before the far higher stakes of an actual lunar descent, which is now assigned to the following flight rather than this one.

Hardware on the pad

The hardware, at least, is starting to come together in Florida. As of August 13, four of the ten segments that make up the twin solid rocket boosters had been stacked inside High Bay 3 at Kennedy Space Center, while engine integration onto the core stage was underway in the neighbouring High Bay 2, a visible sign that assembly of the launch vehicle is advancing.

The next major milestone on the ground is a wet dress rehearsal, a full countdown and fueling test, planned for November 2026 and timed to coincide with a Max Power event at Kennedy Space Center on November 7 and 8. Clearing that test cleanly would be a strong indicator that the rocket itself is on track for a 2027 flight.

The biggest questions hang over the commercial partners rather than the government rocket. Blue Origin suffered a New Glenn explosion during pre-launch testing in May 2026, yet Isaacman said he still expects the company to recover in time, insisting that Plan A is launching on New Glenn and that it has a year to do so before the mission is due.

SpaceX's launch cadence is the other pressure point. Isaacman pointed to the company's ability to fly again in early September and potentially every couple of weeks before the end of the year, a pace that matters because Starship's readiness as a docking target is tied directly to how quickly SpaceX can iterate on its vehicle.

For context, the Artemis II crew flew around the Moon earlier in 2026, marking the first time humans had ventured that far in more than half a century. Artemis III is meant to be the orbital proving ground that follows, with the first crewed landing of the modern era pushed to Artemis IV, still targeted for 2028.

Whether the 2027 date holds will come down to a rare feat of coordination, three heavy rockets from three different programs converging on the same few weeks in orbit. Isaacman's confidence is on the record now, and the coming months of stacking, testing and test flights will show just how realistic that promise turns out to be.
