A Historic First Attempt
Let us start with what happened. In July 2025, Gilmour Space launched its first Eris rocket from the Bowen Orbital Spaceport on the coast of Queensland. The flight was brief: the rocket fell back to Earth just fourteen seconds after liftoff. On paper that reads as a failure, yet it was also the first orbital launch attempt of an Australian-made rocket from Australian soil, a genuine milestone regardless of the outcome.
What Eris Is
It helps to understand the vehicle itself. Eris is the first Australian-designed and built rocket aiming for orbit. It stands about twenty-five metres tall and is designed to carry a payload of up to 215 kilograms into a sun-synchronous orbit at an altitude of roughly 500 kilometres. Those are modest numbers next to the giants of global spaceflight, but they are precisely the class of small-satellite launches that a growing market increasingly needs.
Learning and Trying Again
Crucially, the company has refused to walk away. Gilmour has made clear it is not going to give up, framing that first flight, known as TestFlight1, as the foundation for what comes next. A second attempt, TestFlight2, is planned to follow the company's first hypersonics flight test in the first half of 2026. This willingness to iterate, to fly, fail and fly again, is the very rhythm by which rocketry has always advanced.
Why It Matters
The wider significance lies in the idea of sovereignty. A country that can launch its own satellites from its own territory gains a measure of independence in an increasingly space-reliant world. For Australia, with its vast geography and clear southern skies, a domestic launch industry is not just a point of pride but a practical asset. Success would place the country among a small group able to reach orbit on their own terms.

For all my enthusiasm, I try to stay realistic. Early rockets fail often, timelines slip, and there is no guarantee the next attempt will succeed. Yet I find the direction genuinely encouraging: a private Australian company is methodically building capability that did not exist before.
