The system that keeps humanity in touch with its distant robots is NASA's Deep Space Network. It relies on three great ground stations spread roughly evenly around the planet to maintain contact as the Earth turns.

That spacing is the whole point. With one station in the United States, one in Spain and one in Australia, at least one dish is always facing the right part of the sky, so a spacecraft is never out of reach for long.

Australia's contribution sits near Canberra. The complex there is home to a cluster of enormous dish antennas, the southern-hemisphere anchor of a network that would have gaps in its coverage without it.

Giant dishes listening hard

The scale of the hardware is part of what makes it work. The largest antennas stand many storeys tall, precision instruments that can be steered to lock onto a target moving across a vast and empty sky.

The signals they gather are astonishingly faint. By the time a message from the outer reaches of the solar system arrives, it carries a tiny amount of power, and only a huge, sensitive dish can pull it from the noise.

A unique vantage point

Australia's position gives it a special role. Because the station sits in the southern hemisphere, it can see parts of the sky the northern sites cannot, making it essential for craft on certain paths out of the solar system.

One legendary spacecraft depends on it. The long-lived Voyager probes, now travelling in interstellar space, follow trajectories that make the Canberra dishes their crucial point of contact for sending commands.

More than communication

The dishes do more than carry messages. They also help scientists work out exactly where a distant spacecraft is and how fast it is moving, information that is vital for steering missions across the solar system.

The same antennas can double as instruments in their own right. Turned toward the heavens, they can gather data on planets, asteroids and the structure of the cosmos, adding science to their day job of communication.

A quiet cornerstone

For all its importance, the work goes on largely unseen. Yet every time a probe sends back a photograph from a distant world, there is a good chance an Australian dish helped carry it the last enormous stretch home.

As humanity sends ever more craft into deep space, that role only grows. The quiet valley near Canberra is, in a real sense, one of the places where the whole world keeps its connection to the stars.
